The Golden Schmucks serve up decade-old dreams, stupidities and obscenities conserved in vinyl: calypso, rhythm & blues , mambo, exotica, popcorn, psych, garage, punk and soul. The Golden Schmucks adorn the audience demand for authenticity with a mystical aura. Playing back original 7”s – the extreme medium of the pop cult of authenticity – seems to be the order of the day, but is in reality a mere illusion in the kaleidoscope of time: The DJ as the curator of the misunderstandings of cultural history; music as a cosmopolitan utopia. A fantasy that a mondain audience is all too willing to give themselves up to, but then breaks down quickly after sober reflection on the actual contents and their history. The political incorrectness of a golden, long vanished past appears drained of significance on the dance floor. The yearning for deliverance is stronger than the will to truth.
